An opportunity has arisen for a band 7 Pre Assessment nurse in the Wrexham Maelor Hospital. The pre-assessment team are passionate about getting it right for patients and their families. Main duties of the job

In order to be successful in this post you will need to be an individual that is able to work autonomously, mange your own case load of patients and work closely with other staff from all disciplines to ensure a sufficient and effective service.

You will need to be able to demonstrate that you understand the role and purpose of pre assessment and have experience of working in a pre-op environment. Qualifications And/or Knowledge

Essential criteria

  • NMC Registered Nurse
  • Degree or equivalent in nursing
  • Relevant post registration qualification or equivalent
  • Specialist clinical examination professional nursing knowledge followed by significant post registration experience in practice at senior level, developed to expert knowledge level through post registration specialist training (short courses, specialist study days etc) and continuous rotation through practice in all areas of specialism (equivalent to masters level).
  • All Wales Transfusion competencies and accreditation. Works in accordance with All Wales Transfusion and local protocols for pre-transfusion sampling to obtain and process requests for group and save and cross match blood products where indicated prior to surgery
  • 3Accreditated spirometry training
  • Significant experience at senior level in relevant speciality or clinical area
  • Team Leader experience
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge of the preoperative department. Has knowledge, skills, experience to assume charge of the department in the Team Leader's absence, sickness and absence reporting, short listing and appointment of preoperative assessment clinic staff.
  • Highly specialised knowledge and experience with the skills, ability and confidence to practice with a confident, consistent and competent approach.
  • Extensive specialist knowledge and experience of preoperative Practice and peri-operative care in post in order to autonomously identify, manage, optimise educate and recruit patients onto the Prehabilitation pathway
  • National resuscitation and Mandatory Training
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge, leadership and negotiation skills in contexts across the range of procedures involved in the perioperative pathway. Expert advanced clinical knowledge, and knowledge and skills to apply these in situations that can be unfamiliar and unpredictable. The underpinning expert theoretical knowledge, training and experience to apply this contextually is a prerequisite of this role.
  • Works collaboratively and proactively with stakeholders and attends national conferences and National Association formal study programmes.
  • Is evolutionary and innovative in approach in ensuring that patients remain central to care.

  • Significant experience at senior level in relevant speciality or clinical area. Experience of time management. Adequate post registration experience, with significant extended experience and qualifications.

  • Evidence of advanced utilisation of organisational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Effective problem solver. Excellent professional telephone manner. Ability to lead and develop nurse lead practice
  • Advanced clinical skills, of cardio-pulmonary examination, and detailed medical history taking.
  • Works autonomously.
  • Advanced clinical education e.g. Spirometry, ECG, venepuncture - analysis.
  • Evaluation and interpretation.
  • Advanced analytical problem solving and critical thinking skills, and the ability to apply those skills holistically and contextually in practice.
  • Ability to understand, negotiate and communicate complex medical issues with all members of the multidisciplinary team, referring where appropriate.
  • Identification, initiation and implementation of change, ensuring effective and cohesive service delivery
  • IT skills, office management skills e.g. email M.S. Word. Welsh Clinical Portal WPAS, Radis Ice, Synapse
  • Ability to differentiate between normal and abnormal clinical findings. Interprets results and take appropriate action and clinical advice when indicated.
  • Evidence of knowledge and application of consent, data protection, patient confidentiality and risk management with health and safety issues within the Preoperative unit
