Position
NHS Ayrshire & Arran is inviting applications for the permanent position of Head Orthoptist.
What You Will Do
You will lead, manage and be overall accountable for the hospital and community Orthoptic service as well as the hospital paediatric optometry service and visual field services throughout Ayrshire and Arran. The postholder will take responsibility for the development and implementation of service strategies, policies, professional standards and clinical governance, ensuring continuity and equity of patient care across the service and to be accountable as budget holder for the service.
The post holder works independently and work is self-directed/self disciplined. The post holder requires to have a thorough understanding of and be fully versant with, national directives and local organisational policies and targets and is accountable for the planning, organisation and delivery of services to meet set goals within resources. This requires a significant level of experience in management and administrative processes and procedures, in addition to a high level of in depth specialist clinical knowledge.
The Post Holder Must Possess
A car driver is essential as you will be working between University Hospital Crosshouse and University Hospital Ayr and potentially delivering clinical sessions on Isle of Arran.

The Post Holder Must Possess
- A degree or equivalent recognised qualification in Orthoptics and be State Registered with the Health Professions Council.
- A postgraduate teaching qualification recognised by the British and Irish Orthoptic Society.
- A highly developed specialist knowledge of orthoptic clinical practice acquired through post graduate experience and training in a hospital setting or masters degree and relevant post graduate clinical experience.
- A significant level of experience, training or equivalent postgraduate qualification in Leadership, management and administrative processes/ procedures with extensive knowledge of national and local policies.
