The Group for Education in Museums (GEM) are seeking a Trustee with finance expertise who will take on the role of voluntary Treasurer at this exciting time to make a major contribution to the continued success and growth of GEM.

GEM offers training and professional development opportunities; 1-1 support, an annual conference, disseminating and encouraging practice. We have dedicated representatives across all four Nations of the UK. We provide publications, digital resources and support for sector recruitment. Your assistance on the board will be fundamental in driving the direction of the organisation.

What are we looking for?

GEM is looking for someone with financial qualifications and expertise in financial matters, particularly in relation to non-profit or charitable organisations.

What will you be doing?

GEM supports many thousands of children, young people and adults to engage with museums and heritage throughout the UK and beyond. GEM is a well-established professional membership organisation funded by Arts Council England and the Welsh Government, now in its 76th year. GEM provides support for everyone delivering learning across museums, heritage and cultural settings. The GEM Board meets four times a year, in person and online and the Treasurer chairs the Finance Working Group in conjunction with GEM’s Director and Finance Manager. We are looking for someone with experience in financial matters, particularly in relation to non-profit or charitable organisations. GEM’s office is based at Chatham Historic Dockyard in Medway, Kent. GEM is a friendly, welcoming team of Trustees, staff and volunteers that works collaboratively and collegiately. Responsibilities of the GEM Trustee Treasurer include

  • Providing leadership and advice to the board of Trustees on financial matters and helping the board fulfil its responsibilities for the financial governance and direction of the organisation.
  • Work in partnership with the Director and Finance Manager on all financial matters, ensuring the completion of key financial documents.
  • To be one of the authorised bank signatories for GEM and where necessary, authorise payments according to GEM’s finance policy.
