Research Assistant (Data Science) (Fixed Term)
Cambridge Faculty of Law
Date: 3 weeks ago
City: Cambridge
Contract type: Part time
The Brenton research group is located at the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, University of Cambridge. The Institute is core-funded by Cancer Research UK and has state-of-the-art research facilities for over 20 research groups to undertake world-class research into all aspects of cancer biology.
Ovarian cancer is the 6th most common cause of female cancer related deaths. The research aims of our laboratory are to assess early prevention strategies and identify therapeutically relevant mechanisms of drug resistance in patients with high-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) using genomic and functional approaches. We are a multidisciplinary team of molecular and functional lab scientists, computational biologists, and clinical fellows. The successful applicant will be integrated within a diverse professional network of scientific backgrounds and expertise.
The role holder will help lead a project analysing multiomics datasets to identify molecular prognostic biomarkers of HGSOC. More specifically, this will involve integrating genomic, transcriptomic, immunohistochemistry and clinical datasets to identify prognostically relevant biomarkers using a combination of molecular biology and survival analyses. These biomarkers will help to inform the discovery of biologically relevant disease subtypes, which can be used in future clinical trials to test the efficacy of corresponding high precision therapeutics.
In addition, the role holder will support ongoing research efforts within the group, working with cutting edge sequencing technologies such as long read sequencing and single cell whole genome sequencing. The role holder will be expected to support both the analysis of genomics data, and the development of bioinformatics software which can be used for more automated analyses of group data.
This role would be ideal for a candidate who has completed a bachelor's or master's degree with a substantial data science or genomics component. This role would provide the successful candidate with the research experience, skills and mentoring necessary for a bioinformatics PhD programme or corresponding positions outside of academia.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available for 12 months in the first instance.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a basic disclosure (criminal records check) check and a security check.
Applications are welcome from internal candidates who would like to apply for the role on the basis of a secondment from their current role in the University.
We welcome applications from individuals who wish to be considered for part-time working or other flexible working arrangements.
We particularly welcome applications from women and /or candidates from a BME background for this vacancy as they are currently under-represented at this level in our department.
